THE ORWELLS
For The Orwells, Remember When will be an introduction of sorts-the 12-track rat-race shows the band's repertoire of pranging riffs and sneering, snot-nosed vocals. The tracks are a walloping war-cry from a generation that up until this point has only offered bubblegum pop-the animus of The Orwells. It's quite clear early on the in listening to the LP that the band is well aware of the past, the homage rings through the record, using the ghost of punk's past as their musical sprit guide. However, the band straddles the thing line between their influences and their originality, ripping riffs and smashing drums in a fashion that their age into being just another fact mentioned in their bio.
The Orwells are made up of five 17-year-olds from Chicago, Illinois. They play rock n roll music. Their names are Mario, Grant, Henry, Dominick and Matt. They write songs - scratch that, primitive teenage battle cries - about girls and America and being suspended from high school. Although one might categorize The Orwells' distinct brand of the blues as garage or punk, they would be wrong. The Orwells sound comes from a deeper, different place-a place both long forgotten and also timeless.

WEEKEND
Within a grainy film-still between a summer sunset and the end of times lies the post-punk squall of Weekend. Weekend filter the aggression, tempo and sneer of punk through a wall of reverb, haunting melody, feedback and primitive garage guitar. Formed in San Francisco in late 2009 by three childhood friends, the band have quickly developed a totally distinctive take on the history of post-punk noise rock. Some touchstones along the way include the chaotic psychedelic noise of groups like Skullflower and Terminal Cheesecake, the bad vibes power-drone of "Feed Me With Your Kiss"-era MBV and No Age, and the scything racket of post-No Wave noise bands DUSTdevils and Sonic Youth.

Where many bands who share similar influences are content to bludgeon the listener with noise, Weekend pay special attention to texture and atmosphere, and leaven even the most riotous moments with unexpected shards of melody. Weekend have instinctively staked out a unique sonic territory where feedback guitars, crunching riffs and pounding rhythms are harnessed in the service of, rather than in opposition to, their haunting tunes. Says singer Shaun Durkan: "Our goal has always been to balance the abrasive qualities of punk and noise with something more introspective and vulnerable. Creating that simultaneous push and pull. Like the beauty of an oil fire."

They're rapidly developing a reputation for their stunning live shows, and gigs with bands like Japandroids, A Place To Bury Strangers, Little Girls and SF compatriots Young Prisms are drawing crowds of ever-increasing size and devotion. So far they have two ecstatically-received and now sold-out releases: a fantastic 10" single on Mexican Summer and a split single with Young Prisms on the excellent UK label Transparent. Their debut double-LP "Sports" will be released November 9, 2010 on Slumberland Records.
AUDACITY

After nine years of existence, Fullerton quartet, Audacity, has left the garage of their humble 9th grade beginning, but the garage hasn’t left the spirit of their music. With two LPs, a slew of EPs, and no shortage of touring under their belts, Audacity are hardly a wet-behind-the-ears rock band. Their razor-sharp musicianship and high-energy performances were solid enough to earn them the privilege of serving as the backing band for both King Tuff and Todd Congelliere (Toys That Kill, Underground Railroad to Candyland).

Audacity’s latest full-length Butter Knife out October 29 via Suicide Squeeze is still, at its core, a garage rock record. The economic instrumentation, grit-tinged guitar jangle, pogo-prompting tempos, and sing-along choruses can all be traced back to the seminal Nuggets collections. But ultimately, Butter Knife doesn’t sound so much like an homage to The Sonics as it sounds like a young band striving to make the most ebullient and jubilant noise possible. The new single, “Hole In The Sky” showcases the band’s gift for the on-the-dime changes, sophisticated melodies, and clever instrumental interplay.

When 19-year-old Chicagoans Cadien Lake James, Clay Frankel, Connor Brodner, and Jack Dolan finished high school a year ago, they were under the impression that things had to change. They were expected to go to college, and more importantly, had to deal with the reality of breaking up their band, Twin Peaks, which had just started to get some notice. Three of them committed to Evergreen State College in Olympia with the idea of keeping some semblance of the band together, but it was clear that there was a magic the four of them had. All this happened BEFORE a pivotal self-booked, three-week tour in the summer of '12. They had just recorded their debut album, Sunken, in Cadien's basement, hit the road in earnest, and everywhere they went, one thing remained the same. After seeing the energy, power, and exuberance of their live show, people in every town and members of every band they played with urged them to see this thing through. However, real life is rarely so kind or easy. Deposits were paid, dorm rooms reserved, promises made. Cadien, Connor, and Jack were headed north to Olympia.

It's a funny thing how clarity and circumstance can set and reset the table. After one semester at Evergreen, peoples' compliments still ringing in their ears, the self-described "industrious dudes" decided to quit school and give Twin Peaks a fair shake. They returned to Chicago in December, reunited with Clay, and geared up for their SXSW debut. Esquire even gave them a nod as an "Artist to Watch" at SXSW, calling them "A bunch of dirty, precocious underage kids raised on a steady diet of Jay Reatard and their parents' records...Twin Peaks deploy sugary pop hooks with the infectious enthusiasm of a high school punk band." The guys moved back in with their folks, looked into part-time jobs, and began planning the re-write of the first, post-high school chapter of their lives. The feeling was palpable: Things were about to take off.

So here we stand, ready to offer Twin Peaks to the wider world. A record full of the youthful excitement, sure to elicit "oh yeahs," and if you're not a total square, some body movin'. Sunken is out July 9th on Autumn Tone.
